Tom Hiddleston Will Make Broadway Debut in Betrayal

«The revival of the Harold Pinter play will also star Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton.

Three U.K.-based actors will make their Broadway debuts in a new revival of Harold Pitner's Betrayal. The production, directed by Jamie Lloyd, will star Tom Hiddleston (the Avengers series), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), and Zawe Ashton (Greta), each reprising their performances from the West End staging earlier this year in London.

Performances will begin August 14 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater, according to The New York Times. The 17-week limited engagement, produced by Lloyd's production company, will officially open September 5.

The staging officially opened in London in March as part of the Pinter at the Pinter season. The play marked Hiddleston's return to the London stage following an Olivier-winning breakout performance in Cymbeline, as well as Shakespeare's Othello, Coriolanus, and Hamlet.»

Breaking: Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton, And Charlie Cox Will Lead BETRAYAL On Broadway

«BroadwayWorld has learned that Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton, and Charlie Cox (all making their Broadway debuts as Robert, Jerry, and Emma) will lead an upcoming revival of Betrayal, direct from its critically acclaimed London run.

Directed by Mr. Lloyd, the company will also feature Eddie Arnold as the Waiter.

The strictly limited 17-week engagement will begin performances Wednesday, August 14 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th Street), with an official opening night on Thursday, September 5 at 6:30pm.

"Watching this remarkable cast bring new life to Harold Pinter's greatest work has been one of the most gratifying and exciting experiences of my life in the theater. I am thrilled that American audiences will have the chance to witness their stunning performances", said Jamie Lloyd.

This production formed the culmination of Pinter at the Pinter, an unprecedented London season of Harold Pinter's work taking place over the 2018/19 season. This mammoth project consisted of over thirty pieces including all one-act plays by the most important playwright of the 20thcentury. Marking the tenth anniversary of Pinter's death, Betrayal played in the West End theater that bears his name, breaking all box office records.

Tom Hiddleston returned to the London stage in this production following his acclaimed Hamlet directed by Kenneth Branagh and his Evening Standard Award-winning performance in Coriolanus at The Donmar Warehouse in 2014.

Hiddleston is a British actor, best known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His theatre credits include: Hamlet, Coriolanus, Ivanov, Othello, Cymbeline, The Changeling. His film credits include: Avengers: Infinity War, Thor: Ragnarok, Kong: Skull Island, I Saw The Light, High-Rise, Crimson Peak, Thor: The Dark World, Exhibition, Only Lovers Left Alive, Avengers, War Horse, The Deep Blue Sea, Thor, Archipelago, Unrelated. His television credits include: The Night Manager, The Hollow Crown (Henry IV Parts I & II, Henry V), Wallander, Miss Austen Regrets, The Gathering Storm. He lives in London.

Zawe Ashton will play Emma. Like Pinter, Ashton was born in Hackney, London. Known for her roles in television sitcom Fresh Meat, the comedy series Not Safe for Work, Wanderlust and the forthcoming Velvet Buzzsaw, Zawe starred in The Jamie Lloyd Company production of Jean Genet's The Maids at Trafalgar Studios and played the title role in Lloyd's production of Salomé for Headlong.

Charlie Cox, who plays Jerry, is best known for the leading role in Daredevil for Marvel, Tristan Thorn in Stardust, Jonathan Hellyer Jones in The Theory of Everything and Owen Sleater in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. On stage, he appeared in the 2008 production of The Lover & The Collection, directed by Jamie Lloyd at the Comedy (now Harold Pinter) Theatre, the title role in The Prince of Homburg at The Donmar Warehouse and Nick Payne's Incognito in New York.

«A new staging of Harold Pinter's drama Betrayal will play Broadway for a limited run this summer. Jamie Lloyd will repeat his work as director from a recently concluded West End run, with stars Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton and Charlie Cox returning to the roles of Robert, Emma and Jerry, respectively. All three actors will make their Broadway debuts in the production, scheduled to begin previews on August 14 and open on September 15 at the Jacobs Theatre.

Betrayal charts a compelling seven-year romance, captured in reverse chronological order. The play was first produced by the National Theatre in 1978, followed by the Broadway premiere a year later. The most recent Broadway revival appeared in 2013.

Hiddleston earned an Olivier Award for his turn in Cymbeline and a nomination for his performance in Othello. He is an Emmy nominee and a Golden Globe winner for The Night Manager, with additional screen work including Wallander and The Avengers.

Ashton is known for her screen roles in Fresh Meat, Not Safe for Work, Wanderlust and the forthcoming Velvet Buzzsaw. She has been seen onstage in The Maids and Salomé.

Cox rose to fame in Daredevil, Stardust, The Theory of Everything and Boardwalk Empire. He has appeared onstage in The Lover & the Collection in the West End and The Prince of Homburg at the Donmar Warehouse. Cox made his off-Broadway debut in Incognito.

The cast will also include Eddie Arnold (Journey's End) as the Waiter.

The production will feature scenic/costume design by Soutra Gilmour, sound design/music by Ben and Max Ringham and lighting design by Jon Clark.

Betrayal will play a 17-week limited engagement through December 8.»

The Secret Life of a West End Understudy

«... Miranda Heath has most recently understudied for Zawe Ashton in Pinter’s Betrayal starring Tom Hiddleston.

How did it feel to audition as an understudy for your most recent role?
MH: I knew who the actor was; I knew she was mixed-race, tall. I knew I was ticking boxes. But I had to go in thinking: “I’m going for the lead part” because that could happen. Go in and say: “This is my version.” I went in with my own confidence and style to know I could be playing a leading lady. If you do anything else you’re undercutting yourself. The second you start second-guessing, it complicates things.

How does onstage understudying compare to offstage? [see glossary, below]
MH: For Betrayal, I was an offstage understudy – when you know what you’re auditioning for, it’s a lovely gig. Obviously, the real dream is to be the lead in a wonderful show, but as a jobbing actor going from one job here to another day there, it’s great to be able to think: “I know what I’m doing for three months!” I could pad around in my slippers in the dressing room, say hi to wardrobe, play a game with the kids – it’s not a bad life at all!

How do understudy rehearsals actually work?
MH: Our rehearsals were separate to the main cast, which was lovely because then we could just get on with it. We were given the freedom to explore, but we were reigned in if we were going in a ridiculous direction – which means you have some ownership over the role. It was only towards the end of the process we started watching the main cast. They were two weeks ahead of us. All their rehearsals were filmed and we would look at this to check we weren’t veering off in a crazy direction. Jamie Lloyd [Betrayal’s director] would work with the main cast morning to afternoon, then we would come in for the afternoon, have a chat and cup of tea in the crossover, and work until the evening with the associate director.

How do you manage your nerves when you unexpectedly need to go on?
MH: The Number One question I get asked: “Did you go on?” And when the answer is “no,” their response is: “Ah, bet you’re gutted!” – but we had a full run of the show every week with costumes, tech and notes, and those were my favourite days! Honestly, I would not wish to go on. To do it with the actual cast in this very intimate, “kissy” show would feel very different to how we ran it with understudies.

What do you do in the downtime? Is there downtime?
MH: I thought I would be living the life of Reilly, with plenty of time, but I was way busier than expected. It was an eight-show week and I would watch one or two of those shows per week. We also had our understudy run rehearsal and regular line runs, so the week fills up. During the actual show I would often work on my timing “with” the main cast on the speaker, because you can hear them onstage from your dressing room. And sometimes, I would just read a book.
